    Discovery LIMS: The Laboratory Environment
A great deal of effort goes into making the research process run efficiently at most research centers or institutes. Experts of biological assay development, synthetic chemistry and structure elucidation come together to test tens of thousands of potential drugs each day. Samples move quickly from lab to lab, where they are worked on and evaluated by these

    • Accessed through your favorite web browser, Discovery LIMS is tailored specifically for the drug discovery process

    • Initiates requests, tracks findings, and reports results

    • Works with Oracle or Microsoft Access storage, and is compatible with Document Manager

    Traditional LIMS

LIMS, Laboratory Information Management Systems, were developed to solve this problem of information overload. However, traditional LIMS were developed for the quality analysis and quality control labs, with a heavy emphasis on instrument interfacing and routine analysis. In some cases these systems can be adapted to the discovery process, but their girth is often what gets in the way. In order to accurately and efficiently document the drug discovery process the system needs to be able to meet some very specific needs. For instance, can your LIMS manage your reports? Can you enter reaction schemes and structures when you initiate a request for elucidation? Can you search in a chemically-intelligent way?

    Discovery LIMS

Odds are that the answer to these questions is "no". Here is where Discovery LIMS enters the picture. This is a web-based application designed explicitly for the discovery process. It has no machine interfaces. Intentionally, it cannot be automated. It is tailored to be a light-weight application that can be used to initiate requests, track progress and report results. In addition, it integrates with Document Manager for structure and text searching of analytical reports.

    Key Features
There are several compelling reasons to use Discovery LIMS. First of all, it has a simple-to-use web interface that can track the initiation dates and status of each request. This means a full history, including an audit trail, of each request is maintained. The system also allows requests to be sub-assigned within a lab. Results can be recorded and linked to Microsoft Word reports using Document Manager. The back-end database is Oracle or Microsoft Access depending on the scale of your project. Finally, since Discovery LIMS is entirely web-based, there is no additional client software to install or maintain. This eliminates the burden on your IT department. The entire application runs on a single Windows NT or 2000 server, and can be administered from within a laboratory. Discovery LIMS is so light-weight that it is being adopted by individual labs to manage their requests, yet it is powerful enough to manage an entire enterprise with only a nominal hardware investment.
