    Formulation scientists face different challenges from those working with individual molecules, yet many of the tools they are forced to use emerge from the drug-discovery world, where single-molecule research is the norm. Take an essential task such as compound registration and you will find that most systems are designed for registration of single molecules, with little thought for the world of formulations and mixtures. Prompted by our customers, CambridgeSoft has developed a system specifically designed for this registration need called Formulations & Mixtures.

    Integration with Registration System

    The formulations system still handles registration of single molecules by using our standard Registration System software as the back-end. Single molecules may or may not contain structures, so any pure compound can be registered this way.

    Managing Formulations
    The real power of the system is its ability to build and manage formulations. For example, suppose we wanted to form a polymer recipe using diisocyanate. We add pentaerythitol and propylene glycol to build our polymer. Since the formulations are recursive, we can experiment by combining other additives to the existing formulation. The result is displayed in a tree-like graphical interface to help us understand the new formulation. Then we add the additive to our mixture which forms a new substance to test that is assigned a new mixture ID.

    Structure Searchable
    What may not be apparent, but is the real power, is that the system is fully structure and substructure searchable. It also does automatic cross-referencing. When you are examining a given substance, you can click on a component and it will list all the other formulations which contain that component. This capability is extremely powerful for product development, allowing scientists to move quickly between products, based on component overlap.

    Privacy & Security

    Being web-based on your corporate network, the system is entirely private. Oracle is used as the back-end data storage, with an optional Oracle Cartridge configuration. Oracle's native role-based security is also employed. The system is also open for integration with other systems. A simple hyperlink can connect you to various internal analytic systems based on registration number, substance name, or other linking fields.

    Configurable
    Formulations & Mixtures provides highly configurable registration, and can be customized to most industrial-chemical applications. Given its open architecture, emphasis on ease of use, and deployment on the ChemOffice WebServer platform, this application can be the launching point for connecting a variety of internal information sources. The application speaks to three core needs: a secure repository for information on both research compounds and development formulations, a decision-support tool for scientists, and an integration point for pre-existing proprietary information systems.
